iTunes

For a beginner's guide to iTunes, see the official Apple iTunes Overview, or for a user's guide see The New User's Guide for iTunes.
iTunes is the media player written by Apple for playing and organising all your music files, importing (ripping) songs from CD, downloading music from the iTunes Music Store, and burning music to CD. It is also used to download songs to the iPod.
iTunes makes it very easy to rip songs from your CDs. And the great thing is you don’t have to bother with entering information for your CDs. iTunes does it for you. iTunes automatically finds song, artist and album names — complete with cover art.
iTunes is available as a free download for Mac and PC and is an excellent and easy-to-use application even if you do not possess an iPod.
For more technical advice and information about iTunes see the Apple Support website: http://www.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/

What's On

With over 10 million songs to choose from, the iTunes Store makes finding new favourites an all-out joy. Now you can purchase music priced at 59p, 79p or 99p a song. And, as always, most albums are £7.99. You can listen to free 30-second previews of all songs, so it is very easy to search for any particular song you want.
Now, every song available in iTunes is an iTunes Plus song. This means that all songs are free of burn limits and digital rights management (DRM). So the music you buy will play on iPod, Apple TV, all Mac and Windows computers, and many other digital music players.
From comedy to drama, romance to classic, independent to thriller, the iTunes Store has thousands of films available for purchase. Most start at £6.99. And short films — including popular Pixar animated shorts — cost only £1.29. For more information, see the iTunes Films page: http://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/whatson/movies.html
You can also get the latest incredible apps for your iPhone or iPod touch from the iTunes App Store. You can search and browse games and applications on the iTunes Store — just as you would music or video — and download them with a click. When you connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your computer, iTunes syncs applications automatically to your iPhone or iPod touch, so you can start using them right away. You can also download applications directly from the App Store on your iPhone or iPod touch. For a list of the latest apps, see the Latest Apps page of this website.

Great For Parties!

These tips are great if you're using iTunes to DJ at a party!
Crossfade Playback
In iTunes, select Edit->Preferences->Playback and in that window you can select Crossfade Playback so that iTunes will fade songs in and out (mixing them together like a DJ) during playback. You can also select to automatically adjust the volume to the same level for all songs (by selecting Sound Check):

Gapless Playback
Also for parties, if you import a dance mix CD in which all the tracks connect together seamlessly then iTunes will play the tracks back without a break between them. This is called gapless playback. Bear in mind, though, that the tracks have to be listed sequentially in iTunes to play back in the correct order, so make sure the tracks all have the same album title and track number (these should be created by iTunes automatically when it imports your CD). Then click the Album tab to order the tracks correctly:
However, if you have crossfade turned on then the tracks will only play back gaplessly if you right-click each of the album tracks, select Get Info and tick the "Part of a gapless album" box:
For more information on gapless playback, see the Apple article What is Gapless Playback?

Visualizer
iTunes also comes with a built-in visualizer which provides graphics to match the music you are playing (in the View menu, select Show Visualizer). Turn it on and lose yourself in a 3D-scape of spheres, ribbons and lights that pulsate to the beat and tempo of the song you're playing.
